People, this is big. Like bigger than the Eiffel Tower big. I was lucky enough to score an interview with THE Sam from We are Kindred Spirits. Move over Oprah! You thought your interview with Tom Cruise was a big deal. You got nothing on this!
ohmygoodnessthisissoexciting!!!!!
Sam with her super supportive hubby, Jason. Look at that fabulous hair. Looking good girlie!Without further ado:
Me: I am here with the uber talented and oh so very beautiful and witty Sam, of the fantastically creative Etsy shop and blog: We are Kindred Spirits. So Sam, can I call you Sam?
Sam: Yes, of course you can call me Sam. I also answer to other things including, but not limited to, 'Samantha Christine' when my Mom is mad at me and feels she should use my middle name for emphasis.
Me: I'll stick with Sam, since I'm not mad at you. It's pretty obvious that you are quite crafty. Can you bring us back to when you first discovered your talent?
Sam: I feel that 'talent' is a strong word... I don't think it's a talent as much as a hobby that gets more and more consuming as time goes on. I have always liked different things like making friendship bracelets and bead looms and things like that that girls like but the first time I really got into being crafty is at a scrapbooking party that my Sister-in-Law dragged me to. I went in thinking it would be a fun afternoon with friends and I came away with an addiction (and a lighter wallet). From scrapbooking came jewelry making (which I learned from my Mom) as well as, most recently, sewing. All of which I absolutely love.
Me: I suppose hobby is a good way to look at it, though I must say, I think you are quite talented. You recently decided to share some of your handmade items with the rest of the world. Can you tell me how that came about?
Sam: Well, it all went down on Long Island on July 4th. If memory serves me correctly it went like this:
Kristen: So, I'm thinking of starting an Etsy Shop and I want you to do
it with me.
Sam: Oh my gosh! That's a great idea! I'm totally excited!
*hugs*
Sam: Seriously, I'm super excited about this!
Kristen: Me too!
*more hugs *
Kristen: That explains the "Kindred Spirits" thing then. Now this friend of yours, Kristen I believe you said, what's she like? Do you enjoy working with her?
Sam: Of course I enjoy working with her! I feel like we do an amazing job of inspiring each other to create more and more great things! We are Kindred Spirits after all!
Kristen: She seems quite lovely. Also lovely is your husband, Jason. Has he supported your craft addiction?
Sam: Yes, well.... you see, you have to know something about Jason and I. Our shopping priories differ slightly. He is more focused on paying for rent and food. Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing, but I am just of the mindset that paper and fabric have a greater priority and bring me much more happiness. He does completely support all of my hobbies and does an appropriate amount of oh-ing and ah-ing when I show him something new I have created. He's great. Also, 'lovely' doesn't begin to describe Kristen... I couldn't imagine leading a crafty life without her to bounce ideas off of.
Kristen: You're lucky to have someone who can appreciate the joy you get out of crafting! Has Jason ever partaken (partook?) in some crafty endeavors?
Sam: He has an interest in everything. Literally, everything, so he does have an interest in crafty things too. He appreciates the 'handmade ' quality of items and is really good at pretending to be excited when I make something new. As far as actually crafting.... His Mom taught us both to knit and he has scrapbooked a few pages in his life. One that he made was all about me and it was great. He also painted a matte for a poem that he wrote me once... I would love if he were crafty too but really I'm just appreciative that he supports my obsession.
Kristen: You two are the cutest couple. Ever. On the planet. In the universe.
Sam: Hahaha, well gee, thanks. Usually we make people gag.
Kristen: Now in the spirit of that thing from Inside the Actor's Studio that James Lipton always asks. What is your favorite word?
Sam: I'd have to say "Acorn"Because an Acorn has nothing to do with Corn! Also, it makes me think of squirrels, and I love squirrels.
Kristen: What is your least favorite word?
Sam: My least favorite word is "Moist"
Kristen: What turns you on, creatively?
Sam: Amy Butler fabrics, the smell of paper, Ali Edwards digital scrapbooking, a huge pile of photos back from the printer, finding a new amazingly cute seller on Etsy, finding someone else who shares in my obsession and appreciation for all things handmade Also, Edward Cullen... but he has nothing to do with craftiness but still.... * sigh *
Kristen: What turns you off creatively?
Sam: My BIGGEST turn off is that everything has to be done a certain way. If you think something you are creating has to be done a certain way step back and ask yourself WHY you think that. Also, scrapbookers who get frustrated when they are 'behind'. There is no 'behind' in scrapbooking... if you are recording your memories at all and having fun doing it then you are not 'behind'... you are awesome!
Kristen: What sound or noise do you love?
Sam: My favorite noise is my cats purring. Such a soothing and happy sound.
Kristen: What sound or noise do you hate?
Sam: I detest most noises.
Kristen: What profession other than your own would you like to try?
Sam: Either Librarian, Scuba Instructor, or Flight Attendant.
Kristen: What profession other than your own would you not like to try?
Sam: Any job at Chuck-E-Cheese or Restaurant Health Inspector.
Kristen: And finally, if there is a god, what would you want to hear him say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Sam: That's a hard one.... *pause*..... If you run you can still get in on the poker game with Van Gogh and Abe Lincoln.
Kristen: Well thank you Sam for taking the time to be interviewed by WAKS!
Sam: Well, you're very welcome! that was fun!
